What are Hot spots? 

Hotspots are spots on a dog's skin where there is a point of irritation that is continually aggravated by the animal. This repeated irritation of the affected area can often lead to infections due to bacterial build up in the area. This infection and bacteria build up is what we know to be hotspots. These hotspots can be quite irritating and sore for your pet. If action is not taken to treat these hotspots, There is also a risk of the Hotspots spreading if not treated correctly. 

Symptoms and signs of hotspots. 

When it comes to hotspots there are many signs and symptoms to look out for. Finding early signs and symptoms and early treatment can help prevent the spread of hot spots. 

Things to look out for include: 

  • Redness 
  • Swelling
  • Hair Loss
  • May be oozing 
  • Can also be crusty with dry skin
  • Dog seems to be in pain. 

How do they get hotspots? 

Hotspots are caused by a number of different things that could be a one or a combination. Some of the causes for hotspots include: 

  • Allergies, both food and skin
  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Excess licking from boredom 
  • Infections in the ear and on skin
  • Trapped moisture from swimming or bathing.

Whilst hotspots can occur in any breed they are more likely to occur in some. There are several breeds do tend to be more sensitive than others such as:

  • Golden retrievers 
  • Labs 
  • German shepherds
  • St bernards
  • And rottweiler
